School of Art BFA senior exhibition

Four BFA candidates in the School of Art’s fine arts studio program are presenting their thesis work from April 6-22 at Gallery r, 100 College Ave., Rochester. The opening reception of “Casual Fourplay” is scheduled for 6-9 p.m. Friday, April 6, at the gallery.

Holly Ferguson, Eliza Harvey, Erika McCarthy and Kit Shulman are the show’s featured artists.

Photography and related media MFA thesis show

Thesis candidates in Rochester Institute of Technology’s photography and related media (MFA) program are showcasing their end-of-study work from April 5-22 in William Harris Gallery. The opening reception for “Terra Incognita” is set for 5-7 p.m. Thursday, April 5, in the gallery.

The featured students are Yiyun Chen, Gwendolyn Anne Davies, Rose Liu, Dylan Peter Obser, Allison Nichols and Jade Thiraswas.

Presentation by multidisciplinary artist Federico Solmi

In connection with Federico Solmi’s upcoming exhibit at Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo), the Italian-born, New York City-based artist will give a presentation at Rochester Institute of Technology.

The lecture is open to the public and set for 4:30-6 p.m. Thursday, April 5, in Neblette Conference Room (Gannett Hall, room 1104).

“The Good Samaritans” — a display of Solmi’s new artworks — will open April 6 and run through May 12 at RoCo.

MFA thesis exhibition opening reception

The first of two spring shows exhibiting thesis work of School for American Crafts and School of Art MFA candidates is set for March 30-April 12 in Bevier Gallery. The opening reception will take place from 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 30, in the gallery.

Furniture design alumni slated for guest lecture

Rochester Institute of Technology furniture design alumni David Short and George Dubinsky are returning to campus for a public guest lecture at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 29, in Booth Hall, room 2631. The talk is sponsored by the furniture design program.

Short and Dubinsky are the founders of Edgewood Made, a designer and producer of high-quality furniture and home goods for the contemporary home.

Glass program to host German artist for talk

Anna Mlasowsky, an artist-in-residence at Sculpture Space in Utica, N.Y., is visiting Rochester Institute of Technology’s glass program for an artist talk. It is scheduled for 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, March 22, in Booth Hall, room 3634.

The entire RIT community is welcome to hear about Mlasowsky’s current work and practice.

Born in Germany, Mlasowsky uses emerging technologies and uncommon approaches to glass methodology to create experiment-driven sculptures, objects and video work influenced by glass’ material qualities. She has an international record of teaching, exhibiting and working in residence. read more

Creative duo to speak in University Gallery

Rochester Institute of Technology’s School of Art is set to host Maryland-based artist duo Plakookee from Feb. 12-16.

A creative collaboration between artists and designers Justin Plakas and Rachel Debuque, Plakookee has generated numerous imaginative projects since 2013. During their visit, Plakas and Debuque are scheduled to work with students to make work that will be exhibited in Bevier Gallery, conduct one-on-one critiques with students and deliver a public talk at 5 p.m. Feb. 15 in University Gallery. A small reception for the Bevier Gallery show is slated to take place following the lecture — the work will remain on view until March 10. read more
